Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne among 8 Patriots missing for Panthers preseason game

FOXBORO — The Patriots offense took a major pregame hit Friday, with four starters and eight players total ruled out for their preseason kickoff against the Panthers.

Offensive tackle Trent Brown and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne were surprise absences after practicing all week. Bourne was kicked out of Tuesday’s joint practice for fighting and had a quiet practice Wednesday, a continuation of his largely disappointing camp. Over the past two weeks, Bourne has caught the fewest passes of any Patriot in competitive team drills.

Tight end Hunter Henry, who left practice early Tuesday with an apparent injury and didn’t participate in Wednesday’s joint session, did not play. Offensive linemen Isaiah Wynn, Justin Herron and Bill Murray were also out after sitting out practice all week.

Wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson (concussion) did not suit up, as expected. His status for next week’s joint practices and preseason game with the Raiders is unknown. Seventh-round rookie offensive lineman Andrew Stueber remains on the Non-Football Injury list.

Without Brown, Wynn and Herron, the Patriots started third-year backup Yodny Cajuste at left tackle and moved Mike Onwenu to right tackle. Onwenu played right tackle as a rookie in 2020, but has played right guard exclusively in training camp.

No Patriots defensive players or specialists were ruled out.
